Alves Reis, a nearly-perfect fraud
In 1925, he was the talk of the town. Politicians, soldiers, lawyers, journalists and the average man in the street wondered how such daring had been possible. This year saw the end of the saga of Alves Reis, the greatest swindler in Portuguese history, when groups of two 500-escudo notes, plate 2, with the same serial number were discovered in Oporto.

Escudo, the money of the Republic
5 October 1910 marked the first great revolution of 20th-century Portugal. The monarchy was overthrown and the Republic installed. The change in regime brought with it a change in the monetary unit. Money was no longer counted in “Reis”, but rather in “Escudos”. This visit shows the journey from the money of the Republic, the Escudo, to the Euro. |
