António Cupertino de Miranda was born on 21st January 1886 in Famalicão, the second son of a family of farm owners. In 1915, he moved to Brazil, for political reasons, and stayed there for over 30 years. He worked as a teacher and devoted himself to journalism. In 1918, he began to work in the area of legal representation.
He became representative of the Casa Bancária Cupertino de Miranda & Cª and general secretary of the Banco Aliança in Brazil.
António Cupertino de Miranda played a decisive role in creating the business network that stretched across the Atlantic, and contributed significantly towards the process of capital accumulation that was at the basis of the Banco Português do Atlântico.
On 7th August 1948, he returned to Portugal at the age of 62. With no direct descendants, he led an almost ascetic life and made the most of this new phase to reflect on his life.
He came up with the idea of creating a Foundation. What could have led Mr António Cupertino de Miranda to take such a decision? If we analyse his personality and his approach to life, there can be no doubt that he was an extremely intelligent and cultured man who felt the need to contribute towards raising people's cultural understanding by providing society with projects that would open people's minds to all forms of the arts and progress.
