In Portugal, the lotteries were created by Prince Peter, by means of a royal charter on the 4th of May 1688. These lotteries took place between 1811 and 1816, and their revenue was destined to pay for the ransom of the Portuguese slaves detained in Algiers, after a sequence of attacks by the Muslims on the ships of the European Christian States which sailed the Mediterranean. |
