Financial Education Project " No Poupar Está o Ganho - To Save Is the Gain”
WHAT IS FINANCIAL EDUCATION?
According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Financial Education is the process by which financial consumers improve their understanding of financial products and concepts and develop the skills and confidence to become more aware of financial risks and opportunities, make informed choices and adopt behaviours that improv their financial well-being.
To Save Is The Gain - The 11th Edition of this projet has begun in September 2020.
This financial education project begins every year in September and provides teachers and students with a thoroughout programme with all the resources needed for its implementation.
It aims to transfer financial knowledge to students from kindergarten to first, second, third stages of basic and secondary schools, so that they become aware of the importance of money and also to develop skills that allow them to make correct and informed decisions in the future, helping them to be more responsible consumers.
This project meets the goals and topics of the Core Competences for Financial Education published by the National Plan for Financial Education and by the Ministry of Education and ansvers to the need of providing financial training for teachers. Financial education is nowaways included in the national curriculum and also mandatory in two of the three cycles of education.
No Poupar está o Ganho offers training for teachers, visits to the Museu do Papel Moeda (Paper Money Museum) and access to a digital platform, both for teachers and for students. It is a complete toolkit with resources with different approaches for different school levels and also online training, exercises, lesson plans for teachers, films, games, among other resources for students.
It also provides teachers with permanent support and monitoring throughout the implementation of the entire project,giving them confidence to teach personal finance.

WHY DOES THIS PROJECT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
- It is developed to be used in different contexts: at the Museu da Papel Moeda, at School, at home and online.
- It gives presencial and on-line training to teachers. Training is accredited.
- It provides credible contents that explain topics of the Core Competences for Financial Education. These contents are supervised and validated by the School of Economics of the University of Porto.
- Support is given to teachers and there is a very close relationship between the Museum Team and the theachers.
- It promotes several of events: Savings Day, Global Money Week, Financial Education Olympics and Final Contest. It awards prizes to students, teachers and schools.
Measurement of social impacts
This project has been twice assessed – from 2015 to 2017 and from 2017 to 2020. It was assessed by the School of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto. Scientific results prove that pupils have acquired financial knowledge and literacy skills , that they have changed behaviors and that family relationships have been improved.
This programme is being implemented in several towns of the Porto Metropolitan Area, CIM Alto Minho, CIM Alto Tâmega, CIM Cávado, CIM Tâmega e Sousa and CIM Ave.

It is a responsive platform that allows the viewing and use of contents through tablets and smartphones with the same quality as if they were viewed on the computer, at school and at home.

WHY IS FINANCIAL EDUCATION IMPORTANT?
- Financial education became mandatory in 2018, after the publication of the National Strategy for Education for Citizenship
- Young people should, as soon as possible be trained to make financially sound decisions
- The best way to fight indebtedness is through financial education
- It is essential to promote responsible consumers
- It is very important to change attitudes and behaviors related to money
- We must create a new generation of consumers
- Including financial education in schools' educational projects will promote a change of mindset of students, parents and teachers.
